It’s been 15 years since the strongest tornado to ever to hit the Washington, D.C., area tracked across La Plata, Md. It was the type of tornado that you would expect to see in Kansas, but not in Washington’s southern suburbs.
The tornado hit La Plata at 7:02 p.m. April 28, 2002, and damaged or destroyed 860 homes and 194 businesses. Five lives were lost and at least 120 people were injured. Property damage was estimated in excess of $100 million.
